Parkwood Middle takes top honors in state history contest in Raleigh

Students in the Parkwood Middle School Bear Facts History Club went to the Museum of History in Raleigh on April 27 to compete in the state history contest.
Morgan Stegall, Jacob Mangum, Brooke Wangeheim and Sarah Thornton won in the historical documentary category with a film on “The Skirmish at Wilson’s Store.” The film was about the first battle that took place in North Carolina on Sherman’s March through Union County in 1865 in the American Civil War. The 43rd North Carolina Troops Re-enactor Group and Wingate University assisted with the production of the film. This film will be shown at the Museum of History in Raleigh during the next year.

Sharon Gabler won in the state history quiz category. The club sponsor, Leslie Rivers, won as the state history teacher/adviser of the year in North Carolina for 2007. This was the fourth time since 1993 that she has taken winning history clubs to the state history competition at the Museum of History in Raleigh. For her winning record, the Museum honored her with a plaque for her outstanding achievements over the years in history education. Rivers teaches eighth grade North Carolina history at Parkwood Middle School. Over 1,100 students from across North Carolina competed this year (the largest number to compete on record with the museum) for honors in the state history competition.

Parkwood Middle School won in three of the five categories in which they competed. The Museum of History honored all of the contestants with a catered barbecue luncheon in front of the Legislative Building.

The Mayor of Monroe, Bobby Kilgore, accompanied the History Club to Raleigh and was most impressed with the achievements of the history club.
