Parkwood Middle takes top
honors in state history contest in Raleigh
Students in the Parkwood Middle
School Bear Facts History Club went to the Museum
of History in Raleigh on April 27 to compete in
the state history contest.
Morgan Stegall, Jacob Mangum, Brooke Wangeheim
and Sarah Thornton won in the historical documentary
category with a film on “The Skirmish at
Wilson’s Store.” The film was about
the first battle that took place in North Carolina
on Sherman’s March through Union County
in 1865 in the American Civil War. The 43rd North
Carolina Troops Re-enactor Group and Wingate University
assisted with the production of the film. This
film will be shown at the Museum of History in
Raleigh during the next year.
Sharon Gabler won in the state
history quiz category. The club sponsor, Leslie
Rivers, won as the state history teacher/adviser
of the year in North Carolina for 2007. This was
the fourth time since 1993 that she has taken
winning history clubs to the state history competition
at the Museum of History in Raleigh. For her winning
record, the Museum honored her with a plaque for
her outstanding achievements over the years in
history education. Rivers teaches eighth grade
North Carolina history at Parkwood Middle School.
Over 1,100 students from across North Carolina
competed this year (the largest number to compete
on record with the museum) for honors in the state
history competition.
Parkwood Middle School won in three
of the five categories in which they competed.
The Museum of History honored all of the contestants
with a catered barbecue luncheon in front of the
Legislative Building.
The Mayor of Monroe, Bobby Kilgore,
accompanied the History Club to Raleigh and was
most impressed with the achievements of the history
club.
